‘Deglutition’ is one of six paintings that were on show at Fruitmarket, installed as part of the exhibition, ‘The glass with the fingers dipped in’. The glazed frame is made from stained oak with deep borders and was hung from a threaded metal rod, suspended from the I-beams in Fruitmarket’s Warehouse.

The paintings in this exhibition were produced in tandem with a book of the same title. Developed through a series of visual and linguistic motifs slipping between painting and writing, these paintings were created from the imagination, becoming visual sounding boards for literary motifs and moods, and used as visual provocations that fed back into the writing. A store of other amorphous mental imagery fed into this series, including, but not limited to, 17th-century glassware, public parks, ellipses, vegetables, libraries, dark alcoves, and a woman in a section of an anonymous 16th-century Flemish painting.

Exploring the porous and charged arena of face-to-face encounters, this body of work delves into symbiotic, sensual and disconcerting optical encounters and moments of connection.
